On Sunday, I had the pleasure to host an interactive session at our Trier English Speakers Book Club on the topic of science & spirituality as it is discussed in the book of Dr. Lisa Miller - The Awakened Brain. 💡
The author reveals that spirituality is not just a belief system but a measurable, biological capacity of the human brain. 🧠
Through neuroscience and psychology, Miller shows that when we engage our “awakened awareness”—a mode of perceiving life as interconnected, guided, and meaningful—our brains become healthier, more resilient, and less prone to depression. ✨
Spiritual experiences activate networks tied to love, bonding, and insight (such as the frontotemporal and ventral attention networks) while quieting the Default Mode Network, which drives rumination and despair. 😵💫
Ultimately, the book proposes that spirituality and depression share the same neural pathways—one leading to isolation, the other to connection—suggesting that awakening to meaning is both a psychological and biological path to healing. ❤️🩹
🤓 I’ve created a Quiz as a fun way to learn and process the book which I’d like to share with all who are interested: Click here for the Quiz
Let me know if you have any remarks!
We did the „Coin of Consciousness“ 🪙 exercise which is another practical and fun way to flip our brain modes between achieving (tail side) or awakening (head side).
In any situation (ie. „A stranger smiles at us“, „our boss sends a cryptic email“, „our favourite song plays randomly at the background“ etc.) we could try to react from either side of the coin by flipping it, and observe what happens to our thoughts, emotions, mood, body sensations. 🧘
Lastly, participants drew a paper with small acts of kindness on them (ie. „Compliment a stranger“, „pick up rubbish in your neighbourhood“, „write a letter of forgiveness“ etc.) in order to cultivate altruism and love of neighbours“ which strengthens the pathways of awakening in the brain and protect against depression. 🥰😇
⚛️ These are components of holistic health that I focus on in my own counselling practice, which I collected in the SHE (Synergistic Health Ecosystem) Self-Assessment Tool, also free for anybody to check their status: Click here for the SHE Self-Assessment

Being part of a likeminded community, such as a book club, and sharing our thoughts and feelings, having a sense of belonging and validation are some of the most powerful ways to cultivate our health on the long run and I‘m most grateful for these monthly meetings. Thank you Marilena Zidianaki for all that you do!
If you live in the Trier / Luxembourg area and would like to join, just reach out - or look for one in your area on MeetUp app for example. Life is for sharing 🤗
